Liu Xiaoyi & Emergency Stairs have dedicated years not only to theatre-making but also to arts education. Xiaoyi has led workshops and courses across the world, sharing his expertise in creation, research, production, curation, and criticism. One of his key initiatives is Emergency Camp, launched in 2024.
Emergency Camp is not a conventional performance training workshop. Instead, it is a platform that emphasizes creative ideation, methodological exchange, and the building of artistic networks.
Dates: 25 – 31 December, 2025
Venue: Pien Chih-lin Art Museum, Nantong, China
Upholding our founding vision that “Emergency Camp is not performance training, but a platform for creative generation, methodology sharing, and network building,” this year’s edition takes “The Politics of Space” as its annual theme, focusing on the creative methodology of Site · Order · Performance.
Moving from the venue to the city, and from production to order, we step into real spaces to examine the interplay between site-specificity, narrative, and critique.
Through lectures, workshops, and group creation, mentor Liu Xiaoyi will guide participants in restructuring the spectator-performer relationship using the body, circulation paths, materials, and space. The program aims to hone creative and organizational skills, build a future-oriented collaboration network, and test these methods through shared experiences in a public presentation.
THEME: The Politics of Space
The Chinese title for this year, Yingzao Fashi, draws its name from China’s first systematic architectural treatise (Song Dynasty, 1103 AD). We use “Standards (Fadu) / Construction (Yingzao)” as a metaphor for spatial power and creative methodology, re-examining construction standards and stage order:
Who dictates the movement paths? Who possesses the right to watch and be watched? How does space function as a negotiation and distribution of power?
Simultaneously, we are responding to the recent wave of “immersive performance.” When space is treated merely as a gimmick or a container, the work loses its edge in engaging with cultural structures. We advocate for space to enter the content and form of the work itself—letting movement paths become narrative, materials become arguments, and the spectator-performer relationship become a variable. We believe that public space should summon public consciousness and carry public discourse.
“Limitations and margins are the beginning of creation.” — Liu Xiaoyi, Beyond the Theatre: Space as Symbol and Culture, Guangdong Art, 2024
We will embark on a dual practice of “Norms vs. Anti-Norms”: On one hand, we will learn the craftsmanship of production (materials, scale, structure, circulation, and safety). On the other, we will test the possibilities of “Anti-Norms” (shifting entrances, resetting sightlines, swapping roles, and redrawing boundaries).
Through repeated cycles of micro-construction and deconstruction, we will explore the tangible experiences and invisible mechanisms of Space—Power—Performance.
Through a series of lectures and workshops, this edition explores key themes such as vision, resources, applied research, self-management, structured thinking, archiving, branding, and cultural exchange. The program seeks to examine strategies for artists’ survival and development while fostering a mutual support network among participants.
